Developing a Culture of Service in the Christian Life

In our Christian walk together, do we envision ourselves on a Cruise Ship, or a Battleship?

The response  to the question is important for those who claim to be followers of Christ. The responses of those who walk into our services on a given Sunday morning are somewhat spiritually diagnostic and say much about the "mission" of the church.  Do we have a sense of greater purpose and sacrifice, or is this really about me and my comfort? Our Chairman of Elders, Jim Neal recently challenged us in this area of importance and cautioned the VBC body about becoming "comfortable."

Today, Jesus declares the timeless message, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me."  To further clarify the point, He said, "'For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.  For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?"  (Mark 8:34-36, NASB).

As individuals, the first step is denial of selfish ambition, motives, and thoughts that would compromise 'The' Mission for 'a' mission of our own making and satisfaction. The ability to shoulder the cross we are called to bear and follow Christ is accomplished through a life of service, directed toward others, in response to the finished work of Christ on our behalf.  In this place of service, we find true and lasting fulfillment as He works through us to reach others - for His honor and glory. He is our Commander-in-Chief and deserves our very best.

May we serve Him well - and STAY in the BATTLE!

Very good Pastor Mike. I hope somehow this gets out to our people and they start looking at it.
