Culture of Service

Recently ... while reading behind T. J. Addington in his book, Live Like You Mean It, He makes a strong case for the Christian to; clarify your purpose, live intentionally, and to make the most of the rest of your life.

In the aftermath of the most recent storms, VBC had the privilege of hosting a crew of retired Christian men from Arkansas who helped people "dig-out" of the rubble. They were the Chainsaw team who helped people like Walnut Valley Baptist, and Teen Challenge clear trees from their property. All had retired from their secular careers, but not from their calling.

Addington rightly argues, "We may retire from our jobs, but there is no retirement from the call of God on our lives or the work He created especially for us." He further states, "As long as God does not retire from ministering to us, why would we retire from ministering for Him?

It may seem appropriate for those of retirement age to argue, "I've done my time!" To do this is to misunderstand the nature of God's call. Jobs are temporary; they come and go, and at a certain age most of us retire. However, God's calling is a claim on our lives, and from the time we make Him Lord we fully belong to Him.

It is always too soon to stop serving Him. Let's continue in the race - let's finish well!

Together, in His service
